Case study

Designing exhibitions at the Royal Mint Experience which engage with visitors and create immersive environments where stories are brought to life.

Since 2018 we have designed themed temporary exhibitions at the Royal Mint Experience to enhance the permanent displays and tie in with the Royal Mint’s latest product launches. With content in English & Welsh language, we work with the Museum’s curators to design and project manage entertaining interactive experiences.

Coins and the Sea

The latest exhibition and accompanying podcast explore the broad theme of our connection with the sea and how it has had a far-reaching impact on our coinage.

The exhibition design is loosely based on the interior of the captain’s cabin in Drake’s ship, the Golden Hinde, to create an immersive and entertaining space where visitors can learn about shipwrecks, life onboard ship and the myth and allure of pirates. Maritime objects are displayed alongside historic and modern coins including a series celebrating 200 years of the RNLI.

Crowned: The Making of a Monarch

The coronation of King Charles III and the changes which come with a new monarch – including changes to coins – were explored in Crowned: the Making of a Monarch.

The exhibition space was transformed to reflect the interior of Westminster Abbey, complete with arches, plaques and the Cosmati Pavement floor. Visitors were invited sit in a life size replica of the Coronation Chair and engage with physical and on screen interactives to learn more about changes following a coronation.

2022 saw the Platinum Jubillee of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning British Monarch. This temporary exhibition celebrated this historic event, and also looked at other significate Royal Jubilees and how the Mint commemorated these national events.

A set of projections told the story of some of the Jubilee commemorative coins, including the 1935 Silver Jubilee crown, the firt modern commemorative coin to be struck by the mint. The projections were created by Clay Interactive.

Currency Undercover: The Secret Life of Coins

Currency Undercover investigated the life of currency and bullion in the worlds of espionage and conflict, coinciding with the Royal Mint’s first James Bond products. The display included Bond’s briefcase featured in From Russia with Love, complete with concealed throwing knife and gold sovereigns.

Working with Science Projects and Red Delta we developed a set of hands-on interactives  including a special secure display case which allowed visitors to touch and lift a gold bar. This tied in with the Mint’s increased business in bullion dealing. Other interactives invited visitors to decode edge inscriptions and secret messages.
